From Best of MetroActive: Best Place to Bring a Sick Guitar

Keith Holland’s Guitar Hospital

326 Village Lane; Los Gatos; 408.395.0767

“While your unwell Stratocaster or Marshall amp is recovering, check out the waiting room. In addition to performing repairs and renovations, local luthier Holland sells his Los Gatos Guitars, a line of personally made solid-body electrics going for about $1,000 each—emulating the classic Fender design but, in Holland’s opinion, improving on it. Each guitar comes with a three-year guarantee. The place is an authorized service center for Fender, Tacoma, Gretsch and a few other guitar makers. A visit here is the exact opposite of the intimidation that can sometimes be an unfortunate part of visiting the big-box guitar store. (RvB)”

“For electric guitars, steel string flattops and archtops, I’m pretty sure Keith Holland is the best luthier in these h’yar parts. I’ve had work done at most of the shops in the Bay Area over the years. Keith’s shop is the only one that is CONSISTENTLY on the money.

He’s refretted four guitars for me. I’m pretty damn fussy about fretwork, but I’ve been satisfied with every refret he did. He’s also helped me restore a very precious old flattop. When it comes to driving more than I have to, trust me: I am the laziest bastard around!!! Yet I’m willing to drive from San Francisco to Los Gatos for Keith Holland’s work.”

“A coworker of mine swears by Keith Holland. He’ll do anything from a repair to a tune up.”

Hi Keith it’s Al Dorshkind:

Just wanted to express in writing my extreme satisfaction with the re-fret job you did on my Guild D25. After the first re-fret 10 years ago I lost some clarity on hammer-ons up around the middle of the neck on the first two strings. They’d be muted off at my barre finger or the hammered fret. I thought my technique was just deteriorating with age, but no more! My guitar feels brand new again with the added benefit of 13 years of aging on the wood.

I was so worried about losing the playability of the axe I postponed the work for as long as I could, now I’m happy again! It’s even more gratifying to know someone at least still does such good work when virtually daily and everywhere I see the consequences of the constant degradation of old fashioned standards of workmanship.

Anyway, rest assured my guitar-owning buddies have been advised of your location.

Thanks Again,
Al Dorshkind
Just another poor guy who love his axe(s)

I challenge anyone to play a Custom Shop Fender Strat or Tele and then try a Keith Holland model. Not even close. From tonal woods, sweet electronics, and that certain look and feel, Keith’s guitars have that certain je ne said quoi that Fenders lacks.

I’ve been playing that bass a whole lots since i got it back from Keith and I’ll tell you it sings. The action is sooooo awesome. Other people have played it and said its one of the best in its class that they’ve seen. Nice job Keith… when money stuff settles out i’ll bring some others down to ya!

That’s why I make the 100 mile, 2 hour roundtrip drive everytime I need a string changed. Nobody touches my guitars but Keith Holland!

Keith-you’re an animal! Thanks for all the years of taking care of my guitars. I wouldn’t think of going to anyone else…
